As someone who also suffered cancer as a child at the age of nine at the very beginning of cancer treatment, I can enpathize with Grealy but not with her addictions. she was addicted to everything. I had a profound awareness of my mortality and the fragility of my survivorship. However, there is not a survivor on the planet or off, who doesn't understand the difference between just being alive, and surviving. I hope you will read Ann Patchett's book, truth and beauty. It will give you more insight into Grealy. Being disfigured is not easy to overcome, I know.
