Spoiled for choice Dublin gigs
There’s never a shortage of live music in Dublin, but live music that’s worth venturing out to see is rarer still. That said I’m very pleasantly surprised by the amount of things worth going to over the next few days.
First up are one of my new favourite bands Betamax Format who play instore in Tower Records on Wicklow Street. It starts at 6pm and is free. They’ve also got a great track on the Red Bridge compilation on Risc Records. If I wasn’t going to see Halfset launch their album Dramanalog tonight in the Sugar Club, I’d probably venture along to see Juliette and the Licks. Thankfully Juliette is a better rock star than actress.
Another gig I’m missing tonight is Rodrigo y Gabriela at the Olympia. Worth it alone to see their Take 5/Metallica mash-up.
Coming up on Monday is something really interesting. West Papua Action are putting on a gig featuring Whirlygig, a seven-piece band who play “modern-day folk enlaced with blues and soul, jazzed up instrumentals, and original songs which have a Tom Waits vibe”. Worth a look, no? Also performing is Ronan O Snodaigh who I’m really keen to see. I’m not a massive Kila fan, but his new album is amazing, I love it. Anyway it kicks off on Monday April 18th in the Sugar Club at 8pm and as far as I know the first 100 people receive CD featuring the best of Irish folk and Trad.
