MIA’s story is almost as fascinating as her music. Hailing from Sri Lanka via London, her dad is an on-the-run Tamil Tiger guerrilla. London-based MIA aka Mathangi Arulpragasam’s music . and delivery . is not like anything else you’ll hear this year. Imagine if Ms Dynamite had listened to The Slits or Missy Elliott had come from Jamaica and you’re getting close. Fusing dirty electro, tropical beats and cheap trumpet samples, Bucky Done Gun is sheer genius. Sunshowers is a smidge of bhangra over hip-hop and along the way, she weaves together Caribbean dancehall, UK garage and baile funk. MIA’s singsong playground chant pops up on Uraqt and Pull up the People and even though the production is slightly messy, it adds to sheer freshness of this classic in the making.
