Birdhouses for the soul

birdhouseI have an artist friend, who is great at both being artistic and a friend. Neva Elliott has a very different take on the world which extends from late night chats over wine to creating her diverse art. She has displayed an entire wall of newspaper personal ads, blacking out words that don’t describe her (All About Me), self-help pharmaceutical kits of keyrings and badges housed for sale in vending machines (Self Assessment/Self Amendment) , Wish (a magnified acetate of her own eyelashes displayed on a lightbox), axiomatic bumper stickers, a room full of handkerchiefs embroidered with apologies (All Apologies), and a rubble pile of 360 soap bars bearing her teethmarks on each one (Compulse).

Her current project, The North Dublin Housing Association for birds is currently on display as part of the Sculpture in Context exhibition at The National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin, Dublin.

Here’s her statement on the piece:

“Six specifically created and labelled birdhouses hang from trees around The Botanic Gardens. A larger birdhouse structure placed in the visitors centre with housing application forms placed on the roof of the structure. These forms are be available to the public to fill out (and slot into the structure), in doing so they will be applying for one the bird houses from the project for their own garden. At the end of the exhibition the forms will be assessed and a number of (uninhabited) houses will be allocate to applicants.”

If you’d like to download a pdf and apply for one of these birdhouses for your own garden, go to www.nevaelliott.com and email Neva.

The exhibition runs at the National Botanic Gardens until October 13th.
