The Elected - Sun Sun Sun

The Elected
Sun, Sun, Sun ****

Sub Pop Records, once home to congenitally noisy rock the calibre of Mudhoney, Nirvana and Dwarves, has consistently diversified its catalogue over the last decade to include stellar acts likeThe Album Leaf, Low and Wolf Parade. One of the label’s brightest hopes are The Elected, a four-piece fronted by sometime Rilo Kiley member Blake Sennett. Never has an album been more aptly titled, conjuring up sunny prairies and languid roadtrips. Recorded on the road, it’s a journey of inspired love songs and letters from America. From its lap steel/guitar/keyboards combos and lyrical archness, this echoes one of the best albums of last year, Sufjan Steven’s Illinois . Sennett is the ultimate troubadour and his barroom philosophies are wonderfully evocative.

It’s got that Sufjan roadtrip vibe as does my 2nd favourite album of 06, Kelley Stoltz’ Below the Branches. Superb album. Also out on Sub Pop tomorrow.
