Music reviewing and snooker distractions

ronnieAs a combination of work and pleasure, today I’m listening to the following:

- Just Like The Fambly Cat by Grandaddy (sadly, it’s their farewell album)
- Juana Molina’s superb, sublime album Son
- The debut from Jack Black’s new outfit of pals, The Raconteurs

I’ve also just watched PJ Harvey’s Tour DVD Please Leave Quietly and the fascinating, if tragic The Devil and Daniel Johnston (both recommended, especially the latter).

While the music is playing, I have a confession: the TV is on with the sound off so that I can keep an eye on the score in Ronnie O’Sullivan’s match against Ryan Day. I have had a clandestine crush on the brooding Ronnie for years. There, I’ve said it. My snooker groupieness is finally revealed (no Chas ‘n’ Dave puns, please).

The last session of Ken Doherty’s game is also on later (it’s currently 8-8). Fingers crossed he’ll get back his frame-stealing form from early yesterday.

That mullet man? Ick! I heart Ronnie.

Ken’s just won and is through to the quarter-finals.

I know more than one girl who is afflicted with the same condition regarding The Rocket. A bad boy, mentally ill millionaire, what more could a girl want? ;) I felt a little sorry for Day though, after playing very well he lost his composure completely when it was really put up to him.

Great performance by Ken he destroyed Stevens, on this form he’s as good a bet as anyone for a place in the final, especially with Fu in the next round today.

Williams -v- O’Sullivan looks the tie of the tournament so far. I’m backing Williams to take The Rocket down.

Topsy-turvy match between Ken and Mr. Fu. Ken went 2-0 up, lost the next 5, pulled one back, lost the first frame of tonight’s session to be 3-6 behind and has now rattled off 5 in a row to lead 8-6. Hope he can keep it up.

Speaking in a solidly heterosexual sense…Ronnie is looking ‘healthier’ this year. That tight haircut he sported a while back did him no favours and seemed to emphasise the fragile madness that lurks behind the eyes.

Tony Knowles was always snooker’s No. 1 pin-up (back in the day), with Cliff Thorburn’s Magnum ‘tache earning him the title of ‘housewife’s choice’?

    Isn’t the Raconteurs album amazing?

  6. colink Says:

I know we can get our beard fixes from My Morning Jacket now but is it really the last Grandaddy album?

  7. Sinead Says:

Bonzo - like the Raconteurs a lot, but I’m not as blown away as I expected to be. I love Jack White’s voice though…

Colin (apologies for not replying sooner to your excellent book response, it’s all been a bit crazy and I’ll get back to you on that one).
Sadly yes, it’s the last Grandaddy album and I REALLY wanted to like it more than I did. I know it’s a farewell album but ot suffers from an inability to get off the stage. All of the songs are overlong and run out of steam, which is possibly a metaphor for the album and band as a whole.
It has some nice moments but after several listens, I was quite irritated by the whole thing.

Is that Jack “Black” a typo or a “black is white, white is black, we’re through the looking glass here people” reference??

Is there another underlying crush revealing itself in the keyboard equivalent of a Freudian slip which we should know about?

  9. Sinead Says:

Jeez, it is, and I hadn’t noticed. But you know, when it comes to colour-coded names, he should be Jack Black, what with his gothy looks and all. Far more fitting.

Maybe I also have a tiny crush on Jack White? A good friend of mine has a giant crush on Jack Black and nearly killed me over the King Kong encounter in London. Personally, I’d have run off with Adrien Brody if he’d asked…

  10. Sinead Says:

    Oh no, Ken’s out…

  11. Rick Says:

Ken who…? I thought that was a picture of James Nesbitt….

  12. Cahony Says:

Aye, disaster. He was playing very well. There were some awesome safety battles, two consecutive frames in particular took almost 2 hours between them in the afternoon, Ken’s safety was largely immaculate, and he belted in many long balls he took on also.

Fu seems to be playing the best snooker of his life at the moment though, he didn’t get ruffled at all by the long safety battles. Looks like Terry Griffiths has worked wonders for him.

Odd S/F line up now indeed. I think I’d like to see Fu bring it back to Asia for the first time ever.

King Kong was awesome, especially the 15 minute crazy battle with Kong and the dinosaurs. And Jack Black really did a good job as a semi normal character.
