The Proposition
For anyone who missed The Proposition in the cinema recently, I’d seriously recommend it. It’s released in various US cities over the coming weeks (if anyone reading this is based there) and there’s an excellent interview with Nick Cave, who wrote it, on Salon this week. The DVD is set for release on this side of the Atlantic in July.
I’m a huge Nick Cave fan, but my view of the film (as we’ve been discussing opinions on films recently) wasn’t coloured by this fact. I was just blown away by it, even though it’s a difficult film to watch. Everything is scorched, barren and you get itchy from the quota of flies hanging about. A grisly western set in the Australian outback, it looks at many familiar Cave themes - the bible, murder and morality. Of the latter, Cave says in the interview:
“I really think that morality is kind of an accidental thing. It just depends on your situation; it’s not really a matter of choice.”
It’s also both depressing and admirable that he wrote the screenplay in just three weeks.

Thanks Sinead. I needed to be reminded about this film because it sounded good on the radio review, and I didn’t get to it.

Nice one, I am looking forward to this one… I am also a big fan of Nick Cave’s style - aside from the freaky but fascinating biblical and brutal themes, he has a very strange and unique kind of fantasy world in his head “he walked through the rain and he walked through the mud till he came to a place called the Bucket of Blood” which comes out both in his music and in his writing.

I really loved The Proposition. It is a tough film, but just fantastic. The harshness of the outback. The flies! And the horrific yet strangely compelling characters.
