Was Linda McCartney nearly on The Queen is Dead?

queenIt’s a very long time since I physically bought the NME, but I think I’ll pick it up this week for two Smiths related reasons.

One: because it’s a special commemorative issue with lots of features celebrating 20 years since the release of The Queen is Dead.
Two: To find out if it’s true that Linda McCartney turned down an invite to guest on ‘Frankly Mr. Shankley.

In a snippet of the interview on the NME site, Johnny Marr says: “Morrissey wrote a postcard to Linda McCartney asking her to play piano on the track, but she said no. She just said she couldn’t do it, we would have loved for her to do it because we were big fans of hers.”

Crikey.

Like you Sinead, I saw the special 20th anniversary Queen Is Dead issue of the NME and I was prompted to buy the mag last weekend for the first time in ages. However, the supposedly special coverage left me disappointed. The dissection of each of the LPs tracks by Morrissey, Johnny, Mike and Andy aside, the rest of the coverage was scant, insubstantial, careless, lacking in an appropriate degree of passion and depth in my opinion. Perhaps this was owing to commercial and production pressures, but it promised much more than it delivered I felt. Or maybe I wanted too much. Or maybe compared with the lyrical and musical magnificence of The Smiths and what the songs from the LP signify for me, no analyis could do it or them justice…
