Luke Vibert at Maximum Joy
Seeing as this musical behomoth is still a couple of months away (and that’s if it’s even true - anyone winding me up on this is just plain cruel), I’ll be contenting myself with tomorrow night’s Luke Vibert gig at Maximum Joy in Kennedy’s.
One of Ninja Tunes’ first darlings, Vibert has consistently experimented with all kinds of music, from experimental disco (as Kerrier District) and drum’n'bass (as Plug), to acid techno, breakbeat to hip hop. His work under the Wagon Christ moniker has also been amazing (I remember reviewing Musipal and giving it five stars).
A couple of years back, I co-promoted a gig at which Vibert played. The Limerick promoter for his gig the next night was a tad flaky and Luke was floating around Dublin killing time, so he came back to ours for the day. He sat on our couch scratching Disco Fred’s belly, drinking Lemon Zinger tea and burning lots of his acid and hip hop compiled CDs for me and himself. Lovely chap he was too.
Visit his myspace pad and poke around.
Support on the night is from Mirakil Whip, a Galway-based girl/boy duo who punctuate keys, samples and bleeps with guitars. Looking forward to catching them. Music and details on their myspace page.
The gig is being put on by the lovely folk at Maximum Joy in their new venue, Kennedy’s (near The Ginger Man pub, or for those who go to film screenings, beside Denzille Lane). Doors are 9.30pm. Admission is €12.

Welcome Baz, I was sorry to miss Mirakil Whip but I thought Vibert was pretty good. Good mix of noisy chaos and danceable classics. I know Luke so a few friends and the man himself got to hang out afterwards.
Maximum Joy is great, and all the better for the new venue. I’m looking forward to Cap as Cap on July 28th. I’ve heard some of their new stuff and it sounds fantastic.
