Yesterday’s Observer Food Monthly
What the hell was going on with yesterday’s Observer Food Monthly? Last week I got the Observermail (which gives you a sneak preview of what’s coming up in Sunday’s paper), and it mentioned the Food mag would feature Nigel Slater’s ‘Taste of Summer’. Good stuff, I thought to myself, already looking forward to lots of new recipes to try out, as I’m a fan of his. The OFM cover, impeccably styled as usual, had a sumptious pic of Peaches in Rosewater. So far so good. Inside there were recipes from Nigel, all desserts, and I flicked by to see what else was on offer. And kept flicking. The sum total of Nigel Slater’s ‘Taste of Summer’? Four dessert recipes.
The rest of the magazine was given over to ‘The Great Foodie Guide’, a dull Top 5 list selected by famous and foodie folk alike. Once again, despite the fact that the Guardian and Observer sell here, there were no Irish inclusions, particularly Northern Ireland (we won’t go down that road). No one expects the OFM editors to include Ireland every time they put together such a geographical list, but once in a while wouldn’t hurt.
At least two features made up for it: an interview with Morgan Freeman about his Mississippi restaurant and a crisis in China’s tea industry.

It’s not just yesterday. I noticed a little while back that Slater’s recipes were getting fewer and fewer. Maybe he’d prefer us to buy his books and not get his recipe ideas for free?

Thank goodness it wasn’t just me. Was very disappointed, although the Morgan Freeman feature almost made up for it. There are almost more recepies in the Guardia on Saturday magazine than the Observer Food Monthly these days

Totally agree re the Guardian Saturday mag. The recipes are better too.
