Daft Punk, Marley Park

daftpunk1

Well Daft Punk didn’t disappoint, save for the fact that they only played for about an hour an 10 minutes. The stage set-up and lighting were amazing and apart from two brief interludes, they played tracks like ‘One More Time’, ‘Aerodynamic’, ‘Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger’, ‘Da Funk’, ‘Around the World’, ‘Robot Rock’ and ‘Technologic’ non-stop, mixing and splicing between them. The rain didn’t deter the crowd, who loved it and the sound was excellent.

You gotta love those Boba Fett helmets they sport, but I’d say it’s hot as hell under them.

Pity they aren’t playing The Electric Picnic.

Also got to see Cyril and Cian “An Taobh Tuathail” Ó Cíobháin from 110th Street play a stormer at Maximum Joy afterwards.

I’m jealous now. I had been consoling myself that it would be rubbish because of the rain but now I’m sorry I missed it.

  2. mish Says:

Did you take that photo yourself Sinead? Looks fairly awesome alright :) Reykjavik 101 is a personal fave I must say… How were Digitalism as support?

  3. Pat Says:

They played for less then an hour - which is digusting for a dance act. We spent far far longer queuing to get in / queueing for a beer/ queueing for toilets then listing to music. The tickets where a rip-off too. 55 Euro for 50 mins of music.

There wasn’t even any support . . . this was the worst gig I’ve ever been at . . . . wonder was it even them under those masks!!

  4. Sinead Says:

Mish, can’t claim that pic myself. My camera phone was fogging up in the rain! I missed Digitalism as I got there quite late.

Pat, they came on at 9.25 and played until 10.40, so I make that an hour and 15 minutes and there were a couple of supports, notably Digitalism.
Outdoor gigs usually mean long bar and toilet queues - it comes with the territory. I understand that a short short and long queues are a bummer, but you haven’t mentioned the
music - isn’t that the reason you went along?

  5. mish Says:

Sinead, just wondering where you picked up the wellies you got for EP? I feel a trip out at lunchtime today may be in order to procure such!

  6. Sinead Says:

Mish, I’ve been telling every woman I know who’s going to EP to head down to Roches. I got mine (wait for it) in the children’s department!
They have funky pink/purple ones in a size 4 (I’m normally a size 5 but they fit me) and are quite cute and not too clod-hoppery. They have regular green wellies that go up to size 5. Both are €18 and a steal if they keep your toes dry all weekend, seeing as the weather forecast is pretty miserable.

  7. mish Says:

thanks comrade, though i work on merrion street so it might be a bit much to squeeze in at lunch! I fear my feet aren’t quite as ickle as your own however…

  8. Donal Says:

Can’t say I was too impressed with the gig. I wouldn’t normally go to a dj set in an open venue such as this. I share Pat’s cynicism as to whether it was them under the helmets. They could have different people at every gig if they really wanted to. All they would have to do is press play…

Some of the remixes were really cool but the setting didn’t really suit it. I was surprised at the massive attendance though and most people were well into it (or maybe well out of it).

  9. Sinead Says:

Sounds to me like you guys might be getting old… :)

Doubt MCD would fork out several hundred thousand euros if it wasn’t Guy and Thomas.

I think outdoor venues really suit dj/dance stuff - can think of tons of people who were amazing outdoors (Kraftwerk, Orbital, Groove Armada, 2 Many DJs) - but that’s just me.

  10. Donal Says:

Old before my time Sinead :) Just a matter of taste really. I like this kinda music on an mp3 player or while driving but it just didn’t do it for me there. Any idea where I could get my hands on those remixes though?

  11. Sinead Says:

Honestly Donal, I hear ye. The thoughts of three days in a wet field in Laois this weekend fills me with dread. My inner granny really shudders. :)

Bloggers are great for the ol’ live sets. This guy has their entire Coachella set from earlier this year, which is very similar to the Dublin set.

Are you heading down to the Electric Picnic? Anyone you really want to check out?

  12. Pat Says:

Maybe I’m not comparing like with like - but a dance concert should last much longer then a band. I would have thought that two hours was the minimum. Other similar acts I’ve seen like the Orb or Orbital have played much later into the night.

It really felt like it was just starting when they pulled the plug. They didn’t even do an encore - just lights out & traffic announcements.

I felt ripped off - I reckon that you southerners have just got used to getting ripped off. Maybe you feel you got a good deal for a 1 Euro a min concert & 5 Euro for a beer. Personally I don’t. That concert had no soul.

  13. Sinead Says:

So did you actually like the music? (It was definitely an hour and 15 minutes). Short yes, but will you be writing to MCD to complain?

  14. Rory Says:

One of the best gigs of my life, I thought i’d seen/heard it all until I saw them live. How the hell can anyone say it wasn’t quite that good? The sound was incredible, the atmosphere was even more incredible and music wise it was one of the most intense 85 minutes in my life time!

  15. Donal Says:

The sound was great but … nah, I’m not complaining anymore.

Unfortunately not heading to the Electric Picnic. There are loadsa bands there I’d like to see. Belle & Seb, SFA, Saul Williams, Alabama 3, Messiah J, Deus. Damn, why didn’t I get tickets for this!

  16. Greg C Says:

I agree Sinéad. Daft Punk was amazing. I was dying with a cold and the rain didn’t help but it was a once in a lifetime gig. Very uplifting in my state of unhealth! Not a minute wasted despite the relatively short set. And what a light show. Stunning. Oh and Radiohead the night before were class too. Forgotten how good they are. If only they didn’t end on Creep, bit of a cop-out (or maybe I’m just cyncial?!).

  17. Johnny Says:

How could anyone possibly say it was a dissapointment?! Anyone with even a passing interest in dance music couldn’t help but be impressed. The mixing was amazing-even the Human After All tracks were outstanding. Best atmosphere ever too. You just can’t get entertainment like that. DVD please!

  18. danny Says:

daft punk were the business..not one bad moment..kept the crowd going wild from start to finsh..a breathtaking performance!

  19. Emmet Says:

from the opening chords of close encounters to the rain drenched around the world to the closing segment, it was as close to a work of art as any gig i’ve been to. all the more spine tingling as its rumoured that they’ll never tour again because one of the duo is apparently going deaf in one ear. very unusual for anyone to suggest that this was a dissapointing gig…i really can’t get over it. its brilliance cannot be overstated to be honest.

  20. Sean Says:

I wasnt at the Daft Punk gig myself, but I have a recording of both their gig at Coachella ,California (29/04) & Eurockéennes de Belfort, France(30/06).
They are both IDENTICAL, which leads me to believe that Dublin would be the same.
While this is OK, it doesnt (for me at least) represent a “live” gig (and I mean live dance, not live indie, which is always shite). They may as well be hitting play on their laptop then sitting down for an hour and a quarter.
Sorry, I’m a bit grouchy today!

  21. Ash Says:

Oh my God! How can people say this was disappointing!? I would love to do it all over again! Well worth every penny paid for the ticket. Once in a lifetime gig!

  22. Sean Says:

    Thats my whole point.
Its anything but a once in a lifetime if they are basically playing a CD. I’m not doubting the quality of the CD, dont get me wrong, but in going to a live show I expect a degree of unique-ness.

  23. Ash Says:

It’s all about the atmosphere. Marlay Park was electric………Nuff Said!!!!!!!!

  24. Goose Says:

Sean, any chance of getting a copy of those gigs?

  25. Mairead Says:

    Work sleep consume die.

You aren’t capable of telling the difference between a live act and a CD.

    Work sleep consume die.

  26. Sean Says:

    ???
Righto, fair enough, I bow down to your mystic mumbo-jumbo.

Theres a link in the ie-dance forum to the Coachella gig, just search the previous posts.

  27. Sean Says:

    Sorry, I’m a dumbass.
    Thats ie-dance@yahoo.com

  28. Dairymaid Says:

The gig was legend I knew that much but a slightly mashed memory meant I couldn’t put my finger on why it was so good. But now I’ve downloaded the Coachella set and its giving me f*ckin goosebumps. They could have played all night and it wouldn’t have been long enough…

  29. JP Cahill Says:

I thought the Daft Punk Concert was one of the best experience i had in my life. I am a long time Daft Punk Fan and to finally see them live was amazing. Managed to get straight up the front, if i threw something i could have hit them on their amazing Helmets, thats how close i was. I came out mind blown by the amazing lighting and effects they produced. Most of the lighting was dictated by the type of song and they complemented lighting and sound very well. BUT IT DID CROSS MY MIND A FEW TIMES, WHAT IF THESE ARE JUST TWO FELLAS EMPLOYED BY DAFT PUNK TO DO THE GIG. I do believe it was them. Sure it has to be. They would never get away with it if it was not. Sure the people responsible for bringing them here would make 100% sure it was them. I would rate the Concert 10/10. UNREAL, LOVED EVERY MIN OF IT. Plus have so many class videos and pictures of them from Digital Camera. Wish i could share them to youz all

  30. Jimi Says:

mairead, love it, work, eat, consume, die priceless.. so anyways about the gig, somethign else, never been at anything like it anywhere in the world.. the supporting act or acts were a bit crap so that was a downer but man the minute daft punk came on it was like elecricity had been pumped into the ground in marley park cos EVERYONE was up givin it loads, truly amazing, spine tingling stuff.. daft punk kick ass, always have always will, anyone who says anything different should mail me and i can defo convince them otherwise lol (”,)

  31. JonnyBee Says:
