Paths to Hoovers and Sledgehammers
Thanks to Empire State View for introducing me to Hoovers and Sledgehammers. Feel free to classify their comedy/music hybrid yourself but the track ‘Joyridin’ reminds me of Rats and Tomo from RTE’s excellent Paths to Freedom. Who can forget the immortal golf conversation between snobby barrister Jeremy and our hero Rats?
Jeremy: “What’s your golf handicap? ”
Rats Doyle: “Nothin, just had a couple of scoops. ”
Youtube has various Hoovers and Sledgehammers’ videos including ‘Dalek Diarrhoea’ and ‘Fat Fuck’ live (”I’m turning in to a Fat Fuck”).

Hoovers and Sledgehammers are necessary in Dublin’s sometimes too serious music scene. Catch them live, they’re hilarious!

That’s precisely what Joyridin’ reminds me of!

Since I’ve started working, I meet Rats on a daily basis - and Paths to Freedom DVD has become funnier.
Hell, I even had a patient a few weeks ago who whistles to emphasise his point like the comedian in the grey suit on Naked Camera. I had to leave the room to laugh when he compared diarrhoea (high pitched, stacatto whistle) vs constipation (a low anguished whistle).

Good Jeebus. Jeremy was a gynaecologist. Barrister indeed..

no sinead no!! I saw these guys a couple of weeks ago and their support ‘party weirdo’ blew them away. I found their patter to be pretty dull and music very ordinary.
u should check out party weirdo tho!!!

The best episode of Paths to Freedom was when Jeremy, the gynaecologist, goes on the Gerry Ryan radio show to promote his book, “Women Inside Out”. Needless to say, no one wants to publish it for him.

No Darren no!! H & S rule. Joyridin’ is a modern masterpiece!

Darren is absolutely spot on - Party Weirdo have to be seen and loved. As for H&S, I found “their” humour highly derivative, sub-Fast Show and a bit like listening to your dreary mate reeling off Monty Python dialogue. None of which makes me laugh. Sorry!

Saw these guys last week in the Annex- boy, you’re right on with the “Paths” vibe. So funny. Such a breath of fresh air from your normal 4 man band line up too!
Johnnie, you must be a dry old bird!
P.S never apologize for your opinion.
P.P.S will check out PW for sure!!

Hoovers and Sledgehammers are pure entertainers-fact. Better to be derivative than a plagiarist. ie- party weirdo=electralane
