Fionn Regan - The End of History
Just posting this here as it isn’t up on The Irish Times site.
FIONN REGAN
The End of History Heffa
****
By virtue of age, nationality and a deal with Damien Rice’s Heffa label, Fionn Regan has probably steeled himself for the inevitable comparisons, but then he’s also managed to get himself signed to Bella Union (owned by two-thirds of The Cocteau Twins). In a genre so consistently thwarted by its limitations, Regan offers something honest, unadorned and quite wonderful. The Wicklow songwriter also possesses a trait most singer/songwriters hurriedly excise: sense of humour. Avoiding moany stereotypes in favour of breezy tales and beermat musings, he references everything from badgers and smugglers, to Paul Auster on Put A Penny in the Slot. The more you listen, the better The End of Smiling seems to get, and two months shy of the end of year music lists, it’s safe to say that this is a contender for one of best Irish albums of the year. www.fionnregan.com Sinéad Gleeson
