Music Miscellany week: gigs
This week, expect some digest type posts about music, kicking off with some gig highlights. Tomorrow night, M Ward plays Crawdaddy. He’s a seriously talented songwriter who can flit between influences as diverse as folk and orientalism to alt.country. The new Bright Eyes collection of B-sides and Rarites also includes a cover of Ward’s evocative ‘Seashell Tales’. If that’s too laid back for you, trot along to see Irish muso pranksters Warlords of Pez launch their new album on the same night at Whelan’s. Maybe you just have to hear them do ‘Old Women with Broadband’ live, but you’ve got to support a band who first introduced many people to the Twink remix of ‘Zip Up Your Mickey’.
The incomparable Sufjan Stevens is back for a sell-out gig at The Olympia on Wednesday and old school electro/techno practitioners LFO play The Temple Bar Music Centre on Friday. Thursday night sees a serious line-up of Calexico, A Hawk and A Hawksaw and Beirut. I haven’t decided whether to go or not but if anyone does, Damien wants someone to buy him a Beirut T-shirt. So do I, come to think of it.
Donal Dineen joins Galway band Cane 141 at Maximum Joy on Friday. I’ve only heard Dineen on the radio and am a big fan of his Small Hours show, so I’m very keen to hear what his live DJ sets are like.
Here’s a post about Daniel Figgis that doesn’t use the phrases ’soundscapes’ or ’sound sculptures’. The electronic composer plays Crawdaddy on Saturday night before he departs for New York, where the premiere of his Post Production show takes place. Great support line-up from Toirse, Spectac and the enigmatic David Turpin. And finally, the recipients of many mentions on this blog - experimental folksters Tunng - are definitely a band to catch at Whelan’s this Saturday.
Don’t even get me started on what’s on next week…

Love the M ward album.. probably won’t make it tomorrow night though… need a rest. I got a free ticket for Calexico and Beirut through Beirut’s label which is a nice perk so I’ll be there.
