Music Miscellany week: Gael Garcia Bernal & The Velvet Underground
Easy on the eye. Great actor. And now we find out Gael Garcia Bernal can sing. In Michel ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind‘ Gondry’s latest film The Science of Sleep, Bernal plays a lovesick young chap who falls for his Parisian neighbour (Charlotte Gainsbourg), but more interestingly, he SINGS on the soundtrack. And not just any old track: a loungey Ipanema style cover of one of my favourite The Velvet Underground songs, ‘After Hours’ . Taking the music of the original, it revinvents the song as ‘If You Rescue Me’, performed in the film by GGB and his cat band. Yes that does say ‘cat band’ but we’re talking about Michel Gondry, remember? The Science of Sleep is currently showing in the States but won’t be out here until 2007.
