If only the Sugarcubes would stick around (for joy)

bjork According to Pitchfork, The Sugarcubes played their first gig for 14 years in Reykjavík last Friday. All proceeds went to Smekkleysa, a quirky non-profit record label that also publishes poetry and cards.

I wouldn’t have believed it myself where it not for those luminous photos by Leo Stefansson.

Just as countless Sugarcubes fans (me included) started getting their hopes up for a reunion and daydreaming about a Dublin gig, someone told me that the gig was a once-off to celebrate the 20th (yes, 20th) anniversary of the band’s debut single.

There’s some Youtube footage of ‘Birthday’ which is a bit far away, but they still sound amazing. Note all the cameras/videos in the audience.

  1. Conor Says:

I’m probably showing my age but I saw them back in ‘89 in the SFX and they were brilliant. sounds like they’ve still got it anyway.
