Reliving 10 minutes

A couple of weeks ago, Damien asked people to write something about 10 minutes of their life they’d like to relive again. Time was a factor for me, but when I thought about it, wouldn’t most of those moments be too personal? Putting the personal stuff aside, what could you focus on? Meeting Nick Cave for the first time as a wide-eyed 17-year-old? The last 10 minutes of the 1999 Champions League final when Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - for Man United - knocked in a goal apiece to beat Bayern Munich? (There were tears, I swear) or watching Kraftwerk from the sound desk at last year’s Electric Picnic? In the end, I never got around to it, but Damien posted some nice recollections from various folk.

The whole time the 10 minute thing was sifting in and out of my head, I kept thinking of these lines from a Nick Cave song that conjures up a novel-worth of imagery and narrative:

“If I could relive one day of my life
If I could relive just a single day
You on the balcony, my future wife
Oh where do we go now but nowhere?”

It’s been stuck in my head for days now…

Oh, and speaking of Nick Cave - he’s got a new band.

I came home after 5 or 6 years as an immigrant the day after that match. I met two very happy Man U fans on the bus from Dublin Airport to Heuston Station.

For me the day was odd though - I was coming home and I wasn’t an emigrant any more, but I wasn’t exactly exotic either, now that I was back.

Nick Cave doesn’t need a new band, he needs new hair, the baldy goth bollix…

Treasa, a happy, happy day. My younger brother was up on a seat in the pub and banged his head off the ceiling when he jumped up at the second goal going in.

Martin, I read somewhere (Popbitch? Holy Moly?)recently that Nick is getting very precious about certain back shots of his head. As long as he doesn’t go down the Bono ‘dodgy plugs’ route, it’s all good. :)
