Juana Molina, Writing Myths, “Don’t Look Now, Mr. Bond”
If you do one thing…
Tonight: Go and see Juana Molina in Crawdaddy tonight. Her album Son is one of my favourites of the year (it made my mid-year ‘Best of’ list. The best way to sum it up is “like imagining Astrid ‘Girl From Ipanema’ Gilberto tinkering about with keyboards and samplers” and you can check out some tunes on her myspace page. Doors are 8pm, tickets are €15.
If you’re an aspiring writer: Read John Baker’s latest post on ‘Learning to Write’ entitled “Seven myths about writing and writers”.
This week: Go and see Casino Royale - not just because it’s worth seeing, but to see if you concur (or even spot) Copernicus’ intertextuality theory about the film and Nicolas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now (one of my favourite films ever).
Before early January: Go and see John Gerrard’s Smoketree in the upstairs gallery of the RHA and the Rock Chic guitar exhibition at the National Museum at Collins Barracks. The latter might make you come over all Tenacious D - but try to resist the urge to go and see The Pick of Destiny.
In your life: Have a Seaweed bath. SOON. Went for one at the weekend at the Celtic Seaweed Baths in Strandhill, Co. Sligo. Totally magic - and your skin feels amazing. Must tell the Beaut.ie lasses about it.

That 7 myths was excellent, especially #3 about knowing what you’re saying before you begin. Great blog Sinéad.

I’m disapointed you were in Sligo and didn’t let any of the In Fact, Ah crew know Sinead! Glad you enjoyed the baths - did you do/see anything else interesting around Sligo?

Oh, thanks for turning me on to Juana Molina…she’s fantastic. Missed the gig yesterday but bought the CD today and I’m loving it.
Have you discovered Matt Elliot yet? There’s a new album called Failing Songs out and his last one, Drinking Songs, is a classic…

Have to agree about the seaweed baths as well…in fact, i’ve made a couple of trips out to Strandhill from Dublin just to spend some time in the baths…

Thanks for the shout-out Sinead. Thought that post had gone down like a lead balloon.
Am I talking bollocks, or a little something in it?

Wasn’t Copernicus a remarkable chap, the way one day he could be a James Bond buff, and the next he could evolve a theory to explain the motion of the planets? I’m always impressed by people like that.

juana molina, what a gig. it was incredible to see her recreate the songs from her albums live and all alone. one of the most engaging gigs i’ve ever been to… she’s a genius!

Was looking out for you at the Juana Molina gig.. What did you think?

Copernicus, I think there’s definitely some sense to what you’re saying. Even as a Bond heroine, Eva Green is quite child-like.
Niall, I won’t bore you with the long version, but I made it as far as Crawdaddy and then: car, overtiredness, parking meter, shattered back windscreen. So had to go home, was RAGING.
