Chequerboard and Si Schroeder tonight
Decent gigs are a bit thin on the ground in December, but tonight (Thursday, 14th December) there’s a cracking line-up at Whelan’s courtesy of the Foggy Notions folk. Chequerboard (aka John Lambert) and his fantastic Spanish-guitar-meets-laptop set blew me away at The Sugar Club last weekend so be sure to get down early to check him out. Based on his Dictaphone Showreels EP released on Lazybird, a full-length album will be one of 2007’s highlights. The excellent Si Schroder headlines and his debut album Coping Mechanisms on Trust Me I’m a Thief has gotten universal thumbs up. It also recently bagged the coveted #1 spot in Niall’s Top Irish Albums of 2006 poll. Anyone who has grumbled about the dearth of decent Irish music this year should get along to this.
The Blood & Honey SoundSystem will be belting out Balkan hits between the two acts and DJ Kool Drool plays later on.
Doors are 8pm, tickets are €13.

Did you get to this gig?
Plenty of decent gigs in Cork. Check out Cork Gigs for the full listing. Have been to quite a few already and a lot more lined up starting with Mick Flannery in the Savoy tomorrow night. Arm the Elderly have a gig the night after but I have my third, and final (thankfully), Christmas party.
I’m still catching up on photos from gigs I’ve been to in the last month or so. Roesy last Friday in Cobh was excellent. I think it’s time to decide on favourite gigs of the year!
