Jon Ronson at the IFI

ronsonFor Christmas, my older brother bought me Jon Ronson’s book Out of the Ordinary: True Tales of Everyday Craziness. I like Ronson’s column in The Guardian, but figured that a whole book of his narcissistic whining would be a bit too much. Like Woody Allen though, he injects the right amount of humour and isn’t afraid to portray himself as a pedantic arse. As a result, it’s enjoyable and quite funny.

Next week, the IFI presents ‘An Evening with Jon Ronson’, which involves a talk about his work (including clips from his documentaries, Secret Rulers of the World and Tottenham Ayatollah), followed by a Q&A and book signing.

It takes place on Wednesday 17th January at 6.30 pm at the Irish Film Institute in Temple Bar, Dublin. Tickets are €8 and can be bought from the IFI box office or online here:

Read his latest column here or visit his website.

Oh, you might have noticed the book link above, as I’ve just discovered The Book Depository, who unlike Amazon, ship to anywhere in the world for free.

I’ve seen him before (Winchester, 2000) and he was most entertaining. Though the tone of the talk was (of course) whimsical and comic, it didn’t stop some rather ‘eccentric’ gentleman in the audience asking an earnest, long-winded (and impossible to follow) question about pyramids on the moon (or some such). Ronson batted it away tactfully by saying that yer man’s theory MIGHT have some validity but that he’d need to have all the facts before him etc.

The eccentric guy looked a bit crestfallen. He’d obviously come along to hear “conspiracy expert” Jon Ronson tell us FACTS about Masonic-alien-bankers (etc) that we could integrate into our belief systems. All we got were a sequence of amusing anecdotes and observations. What a rip off!
