Perry Farrell’s Satellite Party and Coachella

Pitchfork reports that Perry Farrell’s new band Satellite Party are to release their first album Ultra Payloaded in May. Also part of the group is Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme (remember their lighters-in-the-air anthem ‘More than Words’?). The album will feature Flea from The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Thievery Corporation, Peter ‘Hooky’ Hook from New Order and a song with lost spoken word vocals by Jim Morrison. Anyone lucky enough to go to Coachella in April can catch them live, along with the newly reformed Jesus and Mary Chain. Actually it seems to be the Reformation festival, with Rage Against the Machine, The Happy Mondays and Crowded House all strapping back on their guitars. The line-up (Bjork, Interpol, Arcade Fire, Jarvis Cocker, Digitalism, The Rapture, LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip (rumoured to be remixing a certain Dublin band), Air, Spankrock, Amy Winehouse, CSS, Benny Benassi (yay! my cheesy walking-around-the-park music), Sparklehorse, Cornelius, Coco Rosie, Girl Talk, Peter Bjorn & John, Grizzly Bear and tons more) would make you cry…

Jane’s Addiction, for my money, were one of the best American bands of the late 80s/early 90s and even Farrell’s later Porno For Pyrnos project had the same energy if not quite the same originality. Lucky for some people who bought Ritual de lo Habitual on the strength of ‘Been Caught Stealin”, only to discover two brilliant predecessors in Nothing’s Shocking and the Jane’s Addiction live album.

In a fit of nostalgia, I’ve dug out Nothing’s Shocking to listen to today. When drunk at parties where coerced singing is enforced by guitar Nazis, I’ve been known to sing ‘Jane Says’. Sadly I haven’t been drunk in nearly four months, so my singing days are on hold.

Jane Says just happens to be a song I can play on the guitar, despite its complex two-chord structure. See you at the blog awards…

The only thing that put me off Perry Farrell is what a BAD DJ he is - he DJs under the name DJ Peretz and his beat mixing is relaxed, so to speak!

However I am in full agreement about Jane’s Addiction being one of the greatest bands of all time. Did you like Strays Sinead? Just Because has got to have one of the best guitar hooks ever! Have you ever seen their movie 3 Days?

Line up for Coachella is AWESOME. Wish I could go….

  3. UnaRocks Says:

oooh, what’s this certain Dublin band Hot Chip are remixing?

    U2?

Anyhoo, not a fan of guitar nazis at parties AT ALL… ‘Oi, if I wanted to hear you I’d buy your record, mutton head!’

A bit like when you go to a pub and there’s a trad band playing and someone barks ‘ciúnas!’ at you if you so much as exhale.

Copernicus, if I was on the sauce, we could have duetted at the Awards. Sober, it won’t ever happen. :)

Alex, have a copy of Strays somewhere, but have to admit I didn’t give it the time it probably deserved, I just forgot about. I saw Three Days years ago, it’s a bit mad, but then so is Monsieur Farrell.
No Coachella for me this year - won’t be allowed to fly then. :(

Una, I heard it from a friend of the band, so I’d probably be in trouble if I divulged!

Dealga, no it’s not U2. Perish the thought of Bono trying desperately to garner a shred of ‘coolness’ by begging Hot Chip to remix one of their dreary songs.

I don’t mind being told to shut up; it’s the forced singing that gets me. “You HAVE to sing something, EVERYONE else is”.
My dad’s a great singer. He has tons of party piece songs, but his favourite is ‘Hey Jude’ - and he sings it better than Paul McCartney (high notes and all). I can’t ever hearing it without thinking of my dad…

Alex -> totally agree, ‘Just Because’, that’s gotta be one of my favourite hooks ever! it’s genius! and a bloody great song too! When Navarro gets the finger out, there’s few to match him!
