Ireland: the Brendan Kilkenny of football…*
After Ireland’s neck was just about saved last night in their weedy 2-1 win over part-timers San Marino, I find out this morning that I’ve got tickets (through the FAI lottery thingy I applied for) for two of the next Euro 2008 qualifiers. Which two? Wales and Slovakia.
For €105.
Not even Germany - although apparently we may be offered them later in the year.
I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. Thousands of Irish fans today probably understand this guy’s frustration (and no, we don’t want Staunton shot, just put out to pasture early). Gerry certainly does, summing up the Irish team’s performance thus:
“This lot couldn’t pass water. They couldn’t cross a road. They couldn’t finish their dinner. Utterly, utterly hopeless.”
* For anyone who doesn’t know Brendan Kilkenny from Pop Idol/You’re A Star/any-music-competition-type-show-with-auditions, he’s on myspace.

Yeah I was wondering who Brendan was. Very very apt.

Meself and herself have had a steady supply of tickets for internationals down the years. Since we moved to Laois and became parents, we decided to pass them on.
I’m glad we did.

[…] And yet, there was something horribly predictable about last night’s match, and although we had a few goal chances we never really looked out of sight of San Marino[1] Wales must be laughing at the thought of their visit to Croke Park. […]

Hmm, I left a comment earlier but it looked funny afterwards so maybe it didn’t go through.
He is a cretin of the highest order and if I was you I wouldn’t waste my money on the Wales or Slovakia games.
You’d be better off using it to fund someone who really will shoot the cunt next time.

You would have applied for the whole lot together - you just won’t get the Germany and Cyprus tickets til about a month before those games.
The performance was shocking but I honestly don’t blame the players - I don’t think you could point at any individual and say their attitude was bad, and they still should have easily had five. It was the way they were set up from the word go.
The thing is they’ll do well enough against Wales (I think we’ll win). We regularly make heavy weather of travelling to these teams - we’ve had crap performances in the Faeroes, Cyprus, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Macedonia, Malta and Luxembourg. Their goal was just comedy icing on the cake

Gerry, you’re a wise man…
Twenty, didn’t get any other comments from you on this post (just a trackback from a while ago). Seriously, I bet you know enough dodgy types that would do a Staunton hit for €105. Plus beer.
Yep, Dealga, that’s how it works, but it’s starting to seem like throwing good money after bad. I’m not so sure they will beat Wales after last night’s non-effort.
Quick - have a look Stan’s Wikipedia entry before they change it.

It gets better

Strong words indeed… But desperate times provoke equally strong reactions
