Girls with guitars (Wetdog) and boys with synths (Ratatat)

wetdogSeeing as I’ve been writing about female guitarists all morning and have just met the three lovely ladies from UK band Wet Dog, it seems good and proper to point you in the direction of their Irish debut tonight at Maximum Joy. The trio describe their music as “stripped-down clatter plus tunes and catchy vocal harmonies” and have been likened to personal faves of mine, The Slits and The Raincoats. If melodic punk with a hint of garage is your bag, you’ve no excuse not to peel yourself off the couch and head out.

Proceedings kick off at 10pm (until late) with support from the Let’s Bolt DJs and Jenny & the Deadites. Admission is a measly €8 and Kennedy’s is on the corner of Westland Row, near the back of Trinity College.

Even if you’re going to see Ratatat in Whelan’s, you’ll still have plenty of time to catch Wetdog later at Kennedy’s.

Over the next couple of months Mici and Darren of Maximum Joy have lined up some Grade A gigs including:

February 23rd: Jessie Evans (The Vanishing / Autonervous, US/Berlin) & Toby Dammit (The Residents / Swans / Iggy Pop, US/Berlin), SiSi (110th Street, Galway) and Rarely Seen Above Ground (Blue Ghost, Kilkenny)

March 9th: The Came From the Stars, I Saw Them (UK) and Tim Sweeney (Beats in Space / DFA, USA)

March 23rd: Choice Music Prize nominee Si Schroeder (Trust me I’m a Thief, Dublin) and Salvatore (Norway)

Ro, you cheeky high-jacking pup. :)

I forgive you, because I love melodicas. They’re no match for xylophones, but still.

Will check out those MB tunes…ta.

i actually tried to pick up a melodica last year in Texas but none were to be had. Must try Waltons. I play a mean melodica should anyone wish to form a band centred around a melodica player with a penchant for Lee Hazlewood, Bix Beiderbecke and The Clash.

I had to miss ratatat last night and i was wondering if it was as brilliant as i’m assuming it was?

  5. Sinead Says:

Captain, I was elsewhere last night but two musician friends went along and both said they were “brilliant”. The band announced that they’re back in April. I know they’re supporting CSS, so they might do a small gig of their own too. Here’s hoping.
