Personal post alert: where do I start with this news?

*Deep Breath*…

Anyone who stops by this blog regularly will notice that the posts tend to stick to arts and culture, with not much reference to personal stuff. Sure, there are personal opinons galore, but I don’t tend to talk much about the non-public side of my life. Today, though, I thought I’d share something, particularly with all those people who emailed, commented and nominated me for a blog award last year for a post that talked about my fears of infertility after receiving a lot of chemotherapy and maintenance drug treament for leukemia.

Yesterday, I cleverly managed to delete the very large number of comments from that same post, when fixing the broken link I’d spotted when Mamon Poulet linked to it from her own post ‘35 going on 13′, which is nominated at this year’s Blog Awards.

Am I going around the houses sufficiently?
Definitely, but I just want to say that I’m thrilled, excited, nervous and delighted to be able to say that I’m just over 20 weeks pregnant. Fear, and a total inability to know what to say or when/how to say it have kept me from mentioning it until now. That, and the fact that I wanted to get to my 20-week ‘big scan’ this morning and all - thankfully - is going as it should be.

Due to the fact that I’ve had a previous leg and lung clot (thanks, leukemia!), I have to wear very unsexy (and horribly tight) anti-clotting stockings every day for the rest of the pregnancy. When the little one arrives, I’ll have to do six weeks of self-injecting an anti-coagulant, Heparin, but this is a minute inconvenience for what seems almost like a little miracle.

Tiredness has been a killer, so I hope I can make it through the whole night of the Blog Awards, as I’m really looking forward to catching up with so many great people. Damnit, I won’t even have the false energy of booze to keep me going on the night. That said, all my cravings have been for sweet stuff, so hopefully sugar will be my best pal on the night…

Update: God, I’m so touched by all the lovely comments, will reply tomorrow when my brain starts working again.

  25. Karen Says:

Ah congratulations! That’s wonderful news! Best of luck for the future, take it easy, put your feet up.

I feel your pain about the stockings, I wore them for a long time before, during and after major surgery in 2005. They gave me the ones right up to my thighs and they were hell! I still have the scars! So if possible get the ones just to your knees and use shed loads of moisturising cream.

You’re right though, it’s a small price to pay for something so fantastic. Congrats again!

  26. tom mulligan Says:

What lovely news. May the rest of the pregnancy go well too. Sleep, sleep, sleep for Ireland. You’ll never regret it. I trust you are going to publish a full list of names to be considered, and not going to cull some of them before we’ve all had a chance to consider them.
    (Sleep, sleep, sleep) squared…

  34. Suzy Says:

Ah brilliant Sinead, good luck and see you in a few weeks. And couldn’t the women in Beaut.ie or someone else do something about the stockings??? I mean there has to be a designer out there that can do something!! I don’t do fashion really (as a recent post on MP pointed out but someone has been there before with compression socks…
