Computer Love: Mr. Hopkinson’s Computer & Audrey 3000

hopkinsonNot sure if I’ve mentioned Mr. Hopkinson’s computer before, but he’s proof that myspace is worth poking endlessly around for new music. It’s a guy from Bristol who covers of indie/alternative songs using his computer, giving them a robot/electro spin. On his page, you can listen to ‘Where is My Mind?’ by The Pixies, Radiohead’s ‘Fake Plastic Trees’, ‘Fools Gold’ by The Stone Roses and Portishead’s ‘Roads’. He also has a bonus page featuring covers of Beck’s
‘Lost Cause’, ‘Crazy’ by Gnarl’s Barkley, ‘The Bird Song’ by Francois and Ivor Cutler’s ‘I Think Very Deeply’.

Now, it seems Mr. Hopkinson also has a ladyfriend (or else just another persona where he gets in touch with his feminine side) called Audrey 3000. On her page, there are covers of ‘Fairytale of New York’, ‘The Power of Love’ by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, ‘Falling’ by Julie Cruise (I have this 12″ and love the song, not just because I was a huge Twin Peaks fan) and - best of all, one of my favourite hip hop tracks ever - ‘Baby I Got Your Money’ by Old Dirty Bastard.

Next month, Mr. H plays a gig with Kieran ‘Fourtet’ Hebden & Steve Reid.

Oh that is excellent… how the hell do you download the tracks? I keep getting taken to a blank page…?

    Thanks for pointing that out!

Frank, it’s top stuff, I love ‘Where is my Mind?’. The links were working fine earlier this morning so I’m wondering if a few people have seen this post and are all clicking on the links? Maybe keep checking back? I’ll keep an eye on it too…

You can also buy an 11 track CD (with bonus remixes) at Things from Here. My favourites: Seven Nation Army and Asleep.

Hey Susan, how are you doing? I’m still avidly reading Dogmatika. Hope all is well.

I’ve heard his version of ‘Asleep’ somewhere else but can’t for the life of me remember where.

I’m well. Now living in Dublin. Working part-time with a friend of yours, you should call in sometime.
