The week that was… and a bit of a break

Last week was fun, exhausting and nerve-wrecking for someone who has never presented a show before, but overall it was a great experience. Big thanks to Edel and Sinister Pete and to all the lovely Phantom folk I crossed paths with. Had some great guests on over the week, so kudos and gratitude to Twenty Major, Future Shorts Ireland, Estel, Jenny Wilson, Lee Child, Stephen Page of The Barenaked Ladies, Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy (who was meant to be in studio but slept it out, so we only got to chat on the phone), Ex-Delgadoes member Alun Woodward of Chemikal Underground who filled me on an interesting new writer/musician project called Ballad of the Books, Adrian Crowley, Lorcan McGrane and Susan Tomaselli of 3AM Magazine and Dogmatika who came in to chat about graphic novels, comics and superheroes and to Jenny Lindors, Rou Reynolds of Enter Shikari (who play The Ambassador tonight) and John Meagher of the Irish Independent.

The space of a week off from blogging has offered time for a few moments of clarity. Over the last few months, the temptation to give up the blog has been overwhelming, but I haven’t quite been able to keep away from it. Only with a week away from it has it occurred to me that right now, I need time for other things: for myself, other people, creativity, oh and rest. Sweet, glorious rest!

I might be back, I might not (but you can still get me at sineadATsineadgleesonDOTcom), but I’ve loved every minute of it and really appreciate all the links, comments, emails and interaction from such an array of fascinating folk.

In a case of one door closing etc, “ledgebag” (copyright Nialler) Jim Carroll has started blogging over at The Irish Times - be sure to stop by and check out his always interesting nuggets of wisdom at On The Record.

For now, all the best,

Sinéad

    Sinead,
It’s a pity - I’ve only become hooked on the blogging experience over the past month or so and yours was one of five or six I checked religiously every day. Along with The Elegant Variation, it was my favourite, too…
No doubt we’ll be hearing from you very soon, in a different medium.
    All the best,
    Shane

  2. Twenty Major Says:

    Good luck, Sinead.

  3. The Good Witch of the Northwall Says:

You’ll be much missed. I’ve always enjoyed reading your blogs and liked the fact that you introduced me to some new and interesting artists. Hopefully you’ll be back, but in the meantime thanks for all writing.

  4. Colm Says:

Best of luck and well done on everything you’ve achieved with Sigla. I’m convinced we’ll see you around these parts again.

All the best Sinéad, hope to see you back at some stage. Hope everything non-work related goes smoothly for you too.

  9. ESV Says:

Aw. But good luck. Hope you get to do the things you want to do…

  10. Garreth Says:

Enjoy the break. Bookworms of the non-chicklit variety might like to visit the new ezine, Dublin Review of Books: http://www.drb.net Very lengthy reviews of mostly nonfiction.

  11. ro_G Says:

ah that’s a pity. you weren’t very good but i liked you anyway.

  12. Maura McHugh Says:

Dear Sinead, best of luck with your projects. I understand completely your reasons for moving on.

A blog should support or augment your creative endeavours. It should not supplant them. Good luck!

  13. Niall Says:

    Aaaaaaaaaaahhh…. :O

I knew it, you were just in it for the accolades!

Enjoy your break (as it is well deserved), your blog is a bit of an inspiration. Oh and you can apply “ledgebag” status to yourself also :)

  14. Susan Says:

Sorry to see you go, but all good wishes.

  19. Ralph Says:

Thanks for having us, you were great. Best of luck! Enjoy the rest :)

  20. Donagh Says:

Ah nuts. No, its a good thing. The rest will do you good. If you come back, it’ll be all the better. If you don’t you’ll no doubt produce something else worthwhile for us to enjoy (a novel, a series of indispensible articles, a ballet based around the songs of Nick Cave, something, anything). Ah nuts.

    All the best!

  21. john Says:

shame and scandal! the end of a great, defining era, Sinead. best of luck, and enjoy the rest.

  22. jim Says:

Damn it, that’s no good at all. Now I’ll have to do some work. One week of the opulence lifestyle at Phantom Towers and she’s too good to hang out with the likes of us. A terrible shame. Come back soon Sinead.

  23. Niall Says:

    opulence lifestyle at Phantom Towers

    I’m sure it’s not that that glamorous….

  24. Greg C Says:

  28. Claire Says:

Ah no, where will I find my new music now!?

Sorry to see you go Sinéad but good luck with everything. Will you make a brief comeback for a certain announcement in July?

  29. omaniblog Says:

Thank you Sinead for being so clear about what you’re doing. Time for reflection is never wasted, I think. I trust that you’ll leave your blog up, so that people can dip back into the archive. You have posted a great collection and it deserves to be kept for posterity, I think.

On a selfish note, with whom am I going to continue the campaign for recognition of Irish Women Writers down the age? I’d like to take all your stuff on this and keep it live on my blog because there is a long way to go yet.

Perhaps you won’t even read this comment? I think I’ll write a post about your decision and link across to all those excellent comments to your fine presentation of the issue.

Anyone who keeps on blogging, as if it were a security rag, is missing the opportunity to reinvent themselves, I think. And overall, the most important thing is the health of the expectant mother. Without her in full health, the child would have a hard time getting at the attention it deserves. [When Grace was un-named, un-gendered, she was known in our house as Itsy…]
    Take care.

  30. Gareth Stack Says:

Sinead, sorry to hear you’re leaving the blogging arena. I’ve really enjoyed your posts and you’ve been my introduction to a variety of new musicians. Best of luck with whatever you end up doing.

  31. Boliath Says:

Well deserved break Sinead, best of luck with the new babby, I’m right there with you, just a couple of weeks behing I think, hope all goes well for you and baby.

Hope to see you back again at some point, will keep the bookmark just in case.

  32. ben Says:

    you never thanked the rags!

    come back soon..

  33. mp3hugger Says:

Sad to see a blog die, even sadder when it is such a good one. You’ll be back, I’m sure of it. Take care.

  34. Paul Gill Says:

Your departure is gonna wreak havoc with the Irish blogosphere’s precarious ecosystem. Can you live with that?
Thanks for all the interesting posts.

  35. Irish Blogosphere Says:

Go on now go, walk out the door.
Just turn around now, cause you’re not welcome anymore.
Weren’t you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye?
You think I’d crumble? You think I’d lay down and die?
Oh no not I! I will survive!
Oh, as long as I know how to love, I know I’ll stay alive.
I’ve got all my life to live,
And I’ve got all my love to give,
    I’ll survive, I will survive!
    Hey hey..

  36. fatmammycat Says:

God dammit! Bah! Well, enjoy the time off, I suppose.

  37. simon Says:

Just came over thinking I would find a life on mars piece but found this. I am so sorry to hear this. hopefully all goes well in the future.

  38. blankpaige Says:

Best of luck. Missing you loads already.
    Paige

  39. James Says:

Sorry to see the blog go quiet, but it sounds like it is for the best. Don’t be afraid to throw us a bone occasionally and keep us informed on the escapades of Disco Fred - good luck.

  40. Paul Says:

    Sinéad noooooooo :(
I hope this is not the end of your blog, but I can definitely understand wanting time for yourself. Anyways, i’ve loved this blog since the first time I visited and I hope you’ll pop around every once in a while over at our site so I know you’re still alive and doing well! Best of luck in any and all future endeavors :)
