Facebook and the listening to Minotaur Shock 1,120 times experiment
Who hasn’t joined a completely pointless group on Facebook only to slink away a few days later when you get sick of the updates? From a group about naming your child Spiderpig if 100,000 sign up to groups formed by people who hate bad grammar/slow walkers/Irish tourists, there are more ways than Scrabulous to waste your time on FB. But here’s one I’ve been keeping track of - Watch Ron Go Crazy.
The concept involves a chap called Ron taking part in what he dubs a “mental exercise” (interpret that in whatever way you want). Ron must listen to the Minotaur Shock song ‘Muesli’ - available on MS’s myspace page - on loop for eight hours a day, for seven days (1,120 plays). Rules also stipulate that a) ‘Muesli’ is the ONLY song he is permitted to listen to for the duration of the experiment, b) If anyone else starts to play music around Ron, he MUST request ‘Muesli’ in an attempt to get them to play it as many times as he can and c) he has to fall asleep listening to ‘Muesli’.
Ron started on Monday October 29th and intends to keep up his Minotaur Shock overdose until this Sunday November 4th, posting daily video updates about the experience.
Now I’m a big Minotaur Shock fan, but listening to ‘Muesli’ for eight hours a day is bound to have similarly awful effects to eating actual Muesli for eight hours a day. Is there a point to it? Not really. Is it fascinating to watch the stuff that people do on the internet? Definitely.
Wonder why he picked that song? It’s from Maritime, a very fine album from 2005 on 4AD.

I must be odd but I’ve never joined anything on Facebook and only looked at one person’s site.
There are plenty of things in life to drive you bonkers. This guy is just borrowing trouble.

Medbh, I commend your strength in not getting sucked in. It’s an awful waste of time (except Scrabble).

Lightweight. I could happily listen to ‘Cradle Burns’ by Rollerskate Skinny 24 hours a day everyday for the rest of my life. I actually think it would KEEP me sane.

I joined up with Facebook like the rest of my family but haven’t joined any groups or looked at any except for your Ron link! Strange guy. I notice there is a telephone number where you can pledge money. It couldnt be that now could it?
