Coen Brothers Retrospective

coensIn January, when you’re broke, off the booze and slumped in a post-Chrimbo funk, you’ll be thanking the IFI. From January 5th - 27th, they’re showing a Coen Brothers Retrospective, no doubt thanks to the glowing praise (not to mention four Golden Globe nominations) No Country for Old Men has picked up in the US.

There will be once-off screenings of Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, Miller’s Crossing, Barton Fink, The Hudsucker Proxy, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, The Man Who Wasn’t There, Intolerable Cruelty and The Ladykillers.

Very excited about their take on the Cormac McCarthy book, especially as it stars the fantastic Javier Bardem. No Country for Old Men is released here on January 18th.

Raising Arizona is possibly the funniest film of all time.

  2. Annie Rhiannon Says:

I am SO looking forward to NCFOM. Most anticipated film of the year for me, and it’s not even 2008 yet.

I have to say i thought intolerable cruelty was very good, I’m so going for post-Christmas Fargo.

Have to say i’d lost faith after the last few efforts, which didn’t really work for me. Intolerable cruelty and lady killers were well below their usual standard.

Great to see they are potentially back on form! Its a great book, so will be interesting to see what they do with it…

It sounds like the perfect way to spend January. There’s a Kubrick retrospective on in Rome so I’ll have to settle for that. Like you and Annie I’m dying to see No Country, I’ve heard only good things. Love the book, and Javier. *sigh*

  6. Graham Says:

Great idea but what’s up with those times???

  7. Medbh Says:

We saw NCFOM just recently. Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin are at the top of their game.
    It’s perfect, really.

i still think Intolerable Cruelty is a pretty underrated film. I really enjoyed it…
and really looking forward to No Country for Old Men now, and that new highly secretive one next year.
