‘Dreadful Thoughts’: reading and writing horror stories

ghostFústar has come up with a fantastic idea that might interest bloggers, writers and anyone with even a passing interest in horror. His new project, ‘Dreadful Thoughts’ is a double-pronged affair. Part one is the ‘Dreadful Thoughts Story Club’, where the man himself and/or readers suggest an online horror/ghost/spooky story for interested parties to read. Once read, everyone reconvenes at chez Fústar to discuss the story a week or two later. Part two involves participants writing their own horror short story (limit 500 words) and submitting it for others to read.

I’m definitely in. Given my obsession with those BBC Ghost stories, my suggestion will have to be something by MR James.

Head on over here to register your interest.

Thanks a million for the kind words, Sinéad. I’d been noodling this one for a while (in an idle sort of way) and just thought it could a) be very enjoyable and b) helpful/stimulating for those who like writing but can never get a piece of fiction finished. Even slackers like me should be able to manage 500 words!

There are plenty of writers who do impressive things with ultra-short stories - Joe Lansdale being one that’s been inspiring and freaking me out recently.

If this gets a bit of momentum behind it should be (frightful) fun. A friendly welcome is guaranteed to all - even nervous types who check under their bed severla times before turning off the light.

Here’s a Bock sort of scary story on audio that might fit the bill. I’ve sent it to Fústar and we’ll see what he thinks.

    Bock,

Very enjoyably unnerving story as I said, but d’limit is 500 words. I’m very strict. There can be no compromise!

Get out the typewriter and conjure a new very-very-short story for us.

It’s a great idea…but I’m not a horror/ghost reader. See my comment on fustar’s for more gory details and a suggestion.
