Arvo Pärt this weekend

Above is ‘Spiegal Im Spiegal’, a piece of music I have adored for years, by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. Tonight, I’m off to see the Hilliard Ensemble and The National Chamber Choir of Ireland performing Pärt’s, ‘Passio’ from his 24 Preludes for a Fugue. It’s being performed in Christchurch Cathedral, so it should be extra special. Shane caught a performance at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dundalk last night and was very impressed.

There are more Pärt performances happening tomorrow. For more details visit the Living Music Festival website.

Update: There are no tickets to be had for tonight’s (Sunday) concert at the National Concert Hall but it will be broadcast live as part of Bernard Clarke’s excellent Nova show on Lyric at 8pm (Nova also has a myspace page) so be sure to tune in. Annette and Karlin have also been to see some other Pärt performances over the weekend.

Will you be there tonight? That website is not the most user friendly either…

Life is serendipity. As I was waiting for a little program called Handbrake to rip a DVD onto my Mac of “Touching the Void” to a format I can watch on my iPhone. (Its a way of killing time on boring train journeys n the winter between Inverness and Glasgow)
I stumbled across your blog on John Connell’s blogroll where we are both both listed. Funnily enough Spiegal Im Spiegal is part of the soundtrack of Touching the Void.

I feel bad that I didn’t go to any of the shows, not least because my mammy and my sister were both in the NCH one on Friday!

    Hello Sinead,
Thanks a lot. What other composer would fill Christchurch on a Saturday night for 75 minutes for the bleakest setting of the Passion according to John since Heinrich Schutz? Incredible. I often observed the audiences-people who took chances on music they thought they might like rather than stuff they knew. The audiences made it for me-great to see people responding to new music. Great to see you and Cillian too.
    Bernard

PS I still want to “steal” all of your CDs! Or at least all the musical content.
