Choice Music Prize tonight - who will it be?

I am really hoping to make the Choice Music Prize tonight but I just wanted to thank those nominees who recently took part in Musical Rooms, and wish all 10 acts the best of luck. The gig takes place tonight in Vicar Street and I think there are still tickets left.

Just noticed Cathy Davey is now evens over on Paddy Power. I’m still rooting for Adrian Crowley.

Who do you think it’ll be?

Update: Thanks to Eolai who has pointed out that you can win all 10 nominated albums via Irish Unsigned by picking the Choice winner as voted by the judges. To enter, send an email to competition@irishunsigned.com with your answer in the subject line of the email before 7pm tonight. The body of the email should contain your name and address. Irishunsigned also have a free bet deal with Paddy Power for the Prize - details over on their site.

Right, it’s all very local around here with Musical Rooms so I have a few non-Irish acts in the pipeline starting with Our Brother The Native.

    Glen Hansard.

  2. Dave Says:

    sorry. couldn’t resist :)

I think Cathy’s gonna do it or maybe delorentos. I would love someone liek Crowley to win, but not sure if he will.

  3. Nay Says:

I’m torn between wild hope for Dry County and SEBP
and Crowley/Davey realism. Wish Kila would get it and teach us all a lesson!

  4. Joe Says:

I got Cathy at longer odds a month or so ago so I’m hoping it’s her :D

Think it could well be a dark horse though, perhaps SEBP?

  5. Declan Cashin Says:

    Come on Cathy!

  6. John Updike Says:

Cathy Davey or Adrian Crowley seem like the most likely to win. I figure we won’t be in for any of the surprises of years past.

That being said, either of these winning would be a disappointment to me. A non singer songwriter winner would be a great result, something that would excite as many people as it would piss off. We need to get out of our comfort zone and start turning a few heads, and bring something a little bit more challenging to the front. We have a multitude of exciting and original acts in the country and we need to fly the flag.

  7. Leigh O'Gorman Says:

i’d love it to be either dry county or sebp, but i think it will be ,iss davey’s album (which is still very, very good)

[…] Crowley has to be a strong contender - he is Sinead’s choice, and she was a judge last yeat I think. I’ve already entered the competition with my choice […]

  9. Eolai Says:

I’m plumping foe SEBP but I’d be happy to see Kila win.

  10. Niall Says:

    Crowley me thinks!

I don’t think the judges will be able to agree on an eclectic album like SEBPs

  11. Niall Says:

Also, I agree with John Updike, I don’t think there will be any major shocks. Just because there has been unpredictability in the past, that does not make a precedent.

  12. boardtc Says:

for the completion references above, the answer in the subject line is who you think will be the overall winner

  13. Sinead Says:

Dave, get outta here. I hear you on Cathy.

Nay, as I said to Eolai, could there a chance of a Kila ‘lifetime achievement’ type vote, even though it’s strictly about the album?

Joe, I wouldn’t rule out SEBP at all, but I think a good chunk of the judges wouldn’t go for them. These things are all about the judges…

Declan, she’s at evens now, so she has to be a real contender.

    John,
“That being said, either of these winning would be a disappointment to me. A non singer songwriter winner would be a great result, something that would excite as many people as it would piss off. We need to get out of our comfort zone and start turning a few heads”.

That’s quite a big bias to rule out a worth winner on isn’t it? And last year, the winner was not a singer songwriter so I’m not sure that there’s a comfort zone to get out of - by it’s nature, it’s an unpredictable prize.
What exciting acts were you thinking of? I was disappointed by Mumblin’ Deaf Ro not being on the shortlist.

Leigh, I like Dry County, but I don’t think they’ll win up against the acts they’re up against. Great odds thoug if they won. Would love to know how much money has been bet on the prize…

Eolai, thanks for pointing out that competition, have added it above.

Niall, hope so! Totally agree, SEBP will divide the judges to much. But then so did Divine Comedy last year.

  14. red Says:

I hope that you make it. It sounds like a fantastic night out.

  15. Sinead Says:

Boardtc, thanks for clarification. I figured people would click on Eolai’s link and figure it out, but have added the additional info.

Red, thank you. Fingers crossed, I’d hate to miss it.

  16. Liz Says:

Might Cathy Davey’s Meteor win go against her?? Great album, and I really like SEBP too and the fact that it is a bit different - but I don’t think that makes them better than Adrian Crowley. He’d get my vote. Whatever way, I’d say Jim Carroll will have his work cut out for him tonight! Have fun if you make it..

  17. Lauren Says:

*Echoes Declan’s ‘COME ON CATHY!!’ sentiment*
