The Wainwright clan have always poured their heart and soul into their work. Martha’s cathartic tales are no different, offering unblinking accounts of failed love and personal trauma. Perhaps marriage to her producer Brad Albetta has changed her tune, given the amount of light relief among these dark confessions. Her debut was rooted in folk, but using three producers here has led to some genre-hopping. She flits from the Kurt Weill hysterics of Tower to a poignant duet with brother Rufus about her mother’s cancer (’In the Middle of the Night’). Wainwright’s voice is capable of swooping drama and country heartache, even managing a chart pop tinge on ‘You Cheated Me’. No subject is off limits, from war and religion to suicide, but it’s the examination of love – good and bad – that makes her such a stellar songwriter.
