Rose Tremain wins Orange Prize

tremainRose Tremain has been announced this evening as the winner of this year’s Orange Prize for Fiction for her novel, The Road Home. I haven’t read it, but then but I’ve read two of Tremain’s other books and found them really tedious. There were three debut novelists - Sadie Jones, Heather O’Neill and Patricia Wood - on the shortlist, but Tremain, the bookies’ favourite at 2-1 picked up the £30,000 prize.

The shortlist:
Nancy Huston - Fault Lines
Sadie Jones The - Outcast
Charlotte Mendelson - When We Were Bad
Heather O’Neill - Lullabies for Little Criminals
Rose Tremain - The Road Home
Patricia Wood - Lottery

I’ve only ever read Restoration by Tremain, and I liked it well enough, but then again, I haven’t raced out to buy anything else by her, so I guess I’m sorta undecided.

Apparently her short fiction is great but I’ve never read it. I can’t same I’m a fan of the Orange Prize mind, given my general ‘women can’t write novels’ sentiment! Especially seeing as A.L. Kennedy’s Day didn’t even make a longlist iirc?

She read at the Writers’ Festival in Dublin last year, so I have signed copies of Music and Silence and The Road Home. I’ve only read about 50 pages of Music and Silence, and I thought it interesting enough, but I had forgotten about both books till now. I suppose one of the benefits of winning prizes is that it jogs readers’ memories about books already purchased but left unread!
