I’m glad to be back on air with The Book Show on RTE Radio One after a short haitus. Our first show aired last Saturday, January 16th, 2016 and featured an in-depth interview with Man Booker Prize winner Julian Barnes. Recorded at his north London home, Barnes gave The Book Show a tour, including a look at his typewriter, a collection of beetles and his substantial bookshelves. In the interview, he spoke about his life and work, including his new novel The Noise of Time. He also spoke movingly about the sudden death of his wife Pat, and his essay about grief in Levels of Life.

“She died seven years ago, but you don’t get over those things and why should you? Why should you want to? The first year or two you’re just trying to survive… you’re just trying to live some much reduced version of the life that you lived previously”.

Audio of the interview is here:

Over the coming weeks, the show has lots of interesting guests, interviews and packages lined up, and it’s great to be working with Zoë Comyns and Regan Hutchins again.
