I could not have anticipated the response to The Long Gaze Back, and the enthusiasm that people have for the Irish short story. A month after the book was published, New Island Books had to reprint it (it’s on to its fourth reprint now, with a paperback due in Summer 2016). The anthology also won Best Irish Published Book at the Irish Book Awards in November 2015. Below are some photos and links to coverage and events relating to the anthology. We’ve had brilliant enthusiastic crowds, and our two events in Belfast have led to conversations about the need for a new anthology of Northern Irish women’s writing. The book was also presented to Ireland’s ambassador to Germany, his Excellency Michael Collins, at the Frankfurt Book Fair by Sinéad MacAodha, Director of the Irish Literature Exchange.
I was interviewed by Kathy Sheridan for the Irish Times Women’s podcast, along with Claire Hennessy of Banshee and Sarah Davis-Goff of Tramp Press about writing, equality and gender bias in publishing.
A couple of weeks later, I interviewed Margaret Atwood for the same podcast and talked about the similar issues (as well as her own work, Ireland’s abortion laws and being a female writer). The idea for us to hold each other’s books was an inspired one by Róisín Ingle.
